A Responsible & Reputable Breeder Will Have The Following Minimum Standards:
Will contact you after you have received your puppy to ensure that everything is going fine and to answer any questions that may have at this time.
Has a Health and Temperament Guarantee which is in writing and signed by both of you.
Provides you with a complete veterinary record of your dog.
Will ask for a non-breeding agreement to be signed by the new owner before the puppy goes to their new home.
Will ask for a contract/agreement to be signed by both of you.
Will ensure that the health of their dogs comes first and foremost in their breeding program.
Offers a life-time sanctuary for any puppy they produce.
Offers life-time support for any questions or concerns that you may have.
Allows you to meet the mother of the puppies and the father (sire) if available or will provide you with pictures, pedigrees and encourages you to contact the owner of the sire (sires are often not on the premises).
Provides you with complete information on the parents and siblings.
Will not breed a dog more than twice out of three heat cycles.
Registers all of the offspring of their breeding with the Canadian Kennel Club (C.K.C.) or the Kennel Club for their Country.
Belongs to a regional and/or national breed club for their chosen breed
Understands the breed standard and can easily discuss the finer points of it with you.
Understand the genetics which make up the breeding process and is able to discuss with you in terms you can understand the finer points of it.
Is actively involved with their dogs in some manner to ensure a well socialized, healthy individual.
When you purchase a puppy from a breeder you can expect to have a happy, healthy dog, with exceptional temperament. The puppy will be well socialized and come with a written guarantee against congenital, hereditary and genetic defects. You should also have a guarantee to cover soundness and temperament. The puppy will be immunized, de-wormed and be of good health. The puppy will come with complete information on the parents and will be registered to the Breed Club of their country. The puppy will also come with life-time support for any issues of concern.
When you purchase from a breeder you ensure that you are not enabling a puppy mill to continue to reap profits at the expense of animals, whose sole existance is to procreate in small congested kennels and in unsanitary conditions. When people purchase from pet stores, they are supporting the puppy mills. NO REPUTABLE BREEDER WOULD EVER SELL TO A PET STORE!
All responsible & reputable breeders put the health & welfare of their own dogs and the puppies produced by those dogs first and foremost in all of their efforts. Being a breeder also means being responsible for the future of our breed. A breeder has an extensive knowledge of the breed which they produce. A breeder breeds for the betterment of the breed and not for profit.
Lastly when you purchase from a breeder you are ensured a puppy that will live a long, happy and healthy life whose primary goal is to shower you with puppy kisses, excited dancing when they come to greet you and most of all - will love you for many years to come.
